The Top 10 Stops On Route 66 In California
Stopping for a great Steak at the Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse in San Dimas if you are hungry, they have an old west atmosphere and mesquite type steaks. They have a wagon train in the parking lot and are not a fancy restaurant. They are known for good service; however do not wear a tie here. There is so much going on in Glendora, everywhere you will see signs about Route 66 and it also has a downtown district where several of its buildings haven’t changed for more than a century. Glendora has several annual festivities that celebrate its rich heritage such as the Flashback to the ’50s, the Great Glendora Festival and the Route 66 Mile Run.
The next town you will go through on the old Foothill Road is Azusa. Even though many things about Azusa are modern you will still feel a part of the past when driving though. You can see the Old Azusa railroad depot and the historic bank building that now houses Wells Fargo. You will see a men clothing store that is truly one of the last mom and pop stores on Route 66 that was open in the good days.
Leaving Azusa, time to take a break from signs, hotel-motels, and mom pop stores and go on an adventure trip and maybe find some gold. Yes in the San Gabriel Canyon there are many mines going up the river.
After looking for gold and finally reaching Pasadena, only 20 miles from LA. Time to eat again and on Route 66, we are presented with many options as usual. We can stop at the Rose Diner or maybe Jakes, which has been open since the 40s.Always a good place to visit is a museum to reminisce the good old days and there are a few in Pasadena. To name a couple, you might check out The Pacific Asia Museum and the South Pasadena Museum.Pasadena has the Rose Bowl Stadium and hosts the Rose Parade every year. A site worth seeing is the Colorado Street Bridge. It spans almost 1500 feet across and was built a long time ago in 1913. It has a nickname too, the suicide bridge because of the many people over the years that have leapt to their deaths.
