The “Mother Road” spans many states. The original Route 66 actually started in Chicago Illinois and went all the way out west, to the heart of Los Angeles. The road was built originally for commercial travel, but there were obvious benefits to family and cross-country travelers as well. The time spent building this historic route was a great investment as out country still shows their love for the original all American Highway. The construction of the Mother Road obviously took many years to complete and started in 1926 when the bill was passed to begin its construction.

The official Route 66 was decommissioned in 1984, but many parts of the original road still remain. Most of the road has been broken down and replaced with larger roads, capable of handling more traffic at higher speeds. The little pieces of the road that have stood the test of time are the ones that many Americans still love to travel, in memory of simpler times and for many, remembering “where they were” when they used to be able to cruise all across the US on this powerful historic route.

Kansas does not have many of the biggest or most well known areas on Route 66, but there are still some very notable and worthwhile stops along the way. The Old Route 66 only cuts through Kansas for 12.8 miles. However, there are many old towns spotted across the countryside of Kansas and there is a lot of rich history in some of these small towns.
