The Top 10 Stops On Route 66 In Missouri
6. Springfield, Missouri is the one city you must visit when making your way across Missouri on Route 66. This is not only considered to be the birthplace of Route 66, but also houses some of the most memorable original stops on the Mother Road. The birth of Route 66 is said to have happened in 1926 in Springfield, when highway officials decided on the name “66” and passed on their decision to Washington officials. In 2006 Missouri became the first state to erect a historical marker on Route 66. Between Kearney St. and Glenstone Ave. in Springfield, MO you will find a new marker that designated the highway as a National Scenic Byway.

You will also find the Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Mosque in downtown Springfield. This is a Masonic structure that was built in 1923 and is the home to concerts and the annual Shriners Circus.
Red’s Giant Hamburg is another spot of history in Springfield; it was an old café on Route 66 that has since been torn down after the owners retired. There will be a historical marker erected in its place, but we don’t know when. This gas station turned restaurant claims to be the worlds first drive thru!

Just wanted to let you know that your post re: Whitehall Mercantile needs to be updated. My mother, Thelma White, died April 13, 2010. My dad, Jerry White, is now operating the store.
