GrantsCafe Top Stops in New Mexico On Route 66Grants Café is among many iconic Route 66 locations that are still operating in Grants, New Mexico.   This old uranium-mining town used to have a booming populous but has lost many of its original residents when the mines shut down.  You can still find a good meal at Grants Café, which has been serving travelers from the Mother Road for many, many years.  You will also find the Sands Motel, Lavaland Motel, and Lariat Lodge here.  All of which have been giving shelter to travelers on Route 66 and local merchants for quit a few years now.

El Rancho Hotel located in Gallup, New Mexico quickly became an icon on the Route 66 road.  When a huge movie man, D.W. Griffith’s brother built this hotel in 1937 this hotel quickly started attracting many Hollywood stars and thus became a big tourist stop as well.  This motel is still in operation and has also been added to the National Historic Register.Gallup, NM offers much more to travelers and Mother Road cruisers.  You will find a massive amount of American Indian history in this town.  The All Tribes Indian Center offers interesting stone carvings and many various locally created jewelry items that are one of kind to Route 66’ers.  The Canyon de Chelly is an 89,849-acre monument within the Navajo Reservation that is a must see.  Downtown Gallup also has a lot of historical sites to offer including; trading posts, galleries, The Rex Museum and historic El Morro theater.  This entire town displays some of the decorative Spanish colonial styling you will see on this trip!

That will conclude our journey across New Mexico on the Mother Road. There is only about 20 miles ahead before we break into Arizona and start a new set of great stops on the legendary Route 66.  We hope you loved the southwestern hospitality on your drive and took in some of the amazing American Indian culture and history. Some of oldest areas in our country along this drive, so make sure to take your time and take a look back into what made this country what it is today.   We are hitting the road again for now; we’ll see you in Arizona.
