The Worlds Largest McDonald’s is located in Vinita, Oklahoma.  There are so many McDonald’s worldwide it is simply staggering and it is no surprise the biggest one anywhere (for many years) is right above Route 66.  Yes, it actually is above the road, we don’t mean it is north of the road.  This McDonald’s actually is no longer the largest in the world, there have been 2 others built that now dwarf this one.  We still think that this restaurant that spans over the top of the I-44 Will Rogers Turnpike (which is on the Route 66 Path) is one of the most unique and is a photo opportunity you will not want to miss.

Vinita has a lot more to offer travelers as it has been considered the “Crossroads of America” since it was established in 1871.  Being the switching yard for the 2 biggest railroads in the country at the time and still housing major railroad and roadways, it still stands up to its name.  You will find many historic building and a lot of culture here, as it was the second township to take hold in Oklahoma and the first in the state to take on electrical service in the early day.

Davis Arms & Historical Museum holds the biggest collections of guns anywhere in the United States, well at least the biggest collection that is readily available for public viewing.  As you are cruising Route 66 and get into the Claremore, Oklahoma area, you will want to make a pit stop here.  Even if you are not a “gun person” so to speak, this museum is still something to see.  As you approach the building you will see a tank standing outside, at this point you know you are at the right place.  Once you enter, you will find isle after isle of almost every gun imaginable here.

The J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum has a special section devoted to the guns of the gangsters of the 20’s and 30’s that houses many original guns from your favorite outlaws from this era.  There is also a section that is dedicated to knives, daggers and swords and this is a real treat for any war buff.  This has to be one of the coolest firearms museums out there, so don’t be afraid to take a stop off here for a blast from the past.

This stop is located right outside of Catoosa, Oklahoma.  If you love the outdoors and are looking for a place to get away from the city, you will not find a more scenic getaway along old Route 66 in this state.  The Savannah Lodge offers a few different options when it comes to staying here, you can stay in the main lodge or in their “Romantic Cabins” which sit on a mossy lined creek on a timberline that makes for an amazing background to your stay here.

If you want to sit back and relax, they have a huge covered porch for those rainy days and offer, “catch and release” fishing also. You will love the rolling hills, tree line, creek and antique dinning area at this cozy bed and breakfast, so we suggest you make this one of your stops along the way on your Route 66 travels.

Catoosa also has one of the most interesting and unique roadside landmarks to claim. The Catoosa Whale is a huge whale built out of steel that was originally given to a local couple as a wedding gift.  It sits in the water of a nearby pond and was erected to be a platform to dive off of into the water.  The whale is huge and looks to be build from parts of a plane, no matter what it is made of, this is definitely a must see!
