Top Stops In Texas On Route 66
Texas is the largest state in the union. However, as it turns out Route 66 only cuts through a small portion of this state. Texas is so huge it is about the same size as the whole country of France. The square top part of the state that sticks up from the rest, referred to as the panhandle, is where our travels will be taking us through Texas. The roads have changed a lot in a few areas of Texas; many areas of the original Route 66 have been bypasses by newer and larger highways. Don’t worry, there are plenty of markers on the road to help keep the Route 66 travelers of today on track as they make there way across the state. However, having a map handy might not be a bad idea either, because there are some zigzags that you won’t want to miss.
Our Route 66 cruise through Texas will take us about 175 miles and will be filled with some great historical towns on the way. There is still almost 150 miles of the original Route 66 road left to cruise on and you will notice the new interstate 40 run parallel with us most of the way right to the north of our Route 66 path. There is only one really big town we will make our way through and that will be on the crossroads of interstate 40 and interstate 27 where Amarillo is found.
We have made it a long way since we started our cross-country cruise in Chicago, Illinois and we have a long way to go, so buckle up and lets see where the best stops are in Texas on Route 66.
