Top Stops In Texas On Route 66

Cadillac Ranch – Now if you are a Route 66 cruiser, the chances are you are looking for something different and you will most definitely find it here. The Cadillac Ranch is located just west of Amarillo, TX. You will know you are in the right place when you see a row of Cadillac’s sticking up from the ground, which they are buried, along side the road. This was setup by a wealthy eccentric by the name of Stanley Marsh. It was here where he orchestrated and funded one of his many artistic projects involving the classiest cars of the time. The Cadillac Ranch was not completed until 1973, towards the end of the mother roads hay day, but this endeavor would bring visitors from all over the world to Route 66. The Cadillac Ranch has moved from it’s original location as Amarillo grew, but this really is something to see and is a must stop in our book.

Roark’s Hardware – This hardware store has a lot of history on the mother road, matter of fact it is the oldest hardware store on Route 66 that is still in operation! You will find this hometown hardware store located in Vega, Texas. As you come into Vega you will notice many original buildings still standing that were part of the Mother Roads history. The old Magnolia Station sits right across the street from Roark’s and has been restored to its original condition. These 2 buildings are both constructed of brick and have stood the test of time better than many of the original structures of the Mother Road.
