MidPoint Café
– The town of Adrian, Texas is the midpoint to the mother road. From this city it is 1139 mile to the beginning of the Mother Road in Chicago, Illinois and it is 1139 miles to the End in Los Angeles, California.  The town of Adrian was a slow start, population really started to grow when Route 66 came through town.  The MidPoint Café was built in 1924 and still serves Route 66 travelers to this day.  It is one of the best food stops you will find along the Texas Route 66 path that is if you love home cooking like we do!You will also find 2 museums of interest in Adrian. If you want to spend a little more time here before you hit the road make sure to make a stop by the Adrian Lions Antique Museum and the Julians Bivins Museum too.

Glenrio Historical Sites – Glenrio, Texas is a town that defines “border town” as it sits right on the boarder of Texas and New Mexico.  If you are going on to New Mexico on your Route 66 journey, you will have no choice but to pass through this old town.  The city is small and there is not as much to see here as there was during the days of fully functional Route 66 highway. However, if you love the history of the roadside locations of the Mother Road, this town really has something to offer.  You will see an original gas station that still stands in its original state in this town and also what is left of a post office that was built around the turn of the century on the New Mexico side of town.  There is also a 40’s style diner called the Little Juarez Café that still stands, but unfortunately no longer operates.  On the way out you will see an very old water tower that was build completely of wood still standing.  You may notice some other parts of this town that look familiar as the movie “The Grapes of Wrath” was also filmed here in Glenrio, TX

That will conclude our trip across the panhandle of Texas on the great Route 66.  We hope you enjoyed all the memorable Route 66 stops along the way as much as we did.  For a state as large as Texas we seem to miss many of the biggest and best tourist locations Texas has to offer.  Although in cases like this, we like to think less really is more.  There is no comparison between the big cities and the nostalgic feel of taking in some true American history like will find in the stops we have just visited.  Our cross-country journey on the legendary Route 66 will continue in New Mexico, so we’ll see you there!
